ÖKOLOG schools – viewpoint from a gender perspective
The project “ÖKOLOG schools – viewpoint from a gender perspective” evaluates the schools taking part in the programme “ÖKOLOGisierung of schools – Education for sustainability” (loosing translated: greening schools) from a gender perspective.
With an external view using a gender perspective focussing on several actors, their activities and selected ÖKOLOG materials examined gender roles at ÖKOLOG schools. The use of language and images in the ÖKOLOG materials went through a gender screening in which the communicational means were analysed respecting the use of gender inclusive language and gender roles in images. Additionally, the material was checked for the particular mention of the gender topic. A statistical evaluation of gender ratio in teachers, headmasters or headmistresses and pupils provided a broad overview.
The study also aimed to investigate how the process of applying “ÖKOLOGisierung of schools – Education for sustainability” developed. Which subjects are treated at the schools? Who are the responsible actors? Which requirements and suggestions come up? To find answers to these questions a survey including all schools participating in “ÖKOLOGisierung of schools – Education for sustainability” addressed headmasters/headmistresses, ÖKOLOG coordinators and other people involved in the programme. The questions of the survey were developed to suit the different actors from the target groups.
The survey revealed informative findings regarding personal assessments of factors of success, demands for support as well as the impairing, critical and promoting factors of the project. Furthermore, the study provided an insight into background and motivation of involved actors.
Based on the data analysis and interpretation of the results, recommendations were made on how to incorporate the gender perspective into the programme “ÖKOLOGisierung of schools – Education for sustainability”.
