Environmental Professions – Insights into the world of environmental- and technological-oriented R&D-professions

Nowadays it is difficult to motivate and inspire children and adolescents for applied research. Within the project “Environmental Professions” kindergartners and pupils of all school levels are introduced into study programs and possible occupational profiles of the University of Life Sciences Vienna in order to raise their interest in research, technologies and innovation.

The children and adolescents gain insights into environmental-oriented education in the field of natural sciences, technologies, society and economic sciences through age appropriate activities like research and experiment workshops or specific speed-dating-events with graduates, employees and researchers of the University of Life Sciences. Practical elements offer the participants the chance to explore and experiment on their own and gain real-world insights into the various professions. The innovative pedagogical concept imparts numerous professional options enabled by an education at the University of Life Scienes.

Workshops, excursions and promotion weeks which include speed-dating-events with representatives of the various professions are organised to make occupational profiles understandable for the children and adolescents and to give a theoretical as well as practical overview of the diverse possibilities.

Role models play an important role by reporting of their everyday life in their profession or research.  They are embodied by researchers of the University of Life Sciences whereby especially researchers with migrant backgrounds are involved. Also, academic graduates of the university which work in extramural research institutions or companies embody role models. Particularly, graduates whose research is international and intercultural are involved.

Getting active in the workshops, excursions and promotion weeks arouses the children´s and adolescents´ interest for the study programs of the University of Life Sciences and encourages their curiosity. New experiences and perspectives of the occupational fields provide initial orientation in order to encourage the target group to pursue a career in environmental- and technological-oriented R&D-professions.
