Smart Pölten

Design of green and open spaces as dynamic field of development for quality of life through social innovations

The present project „Smart Pölten“ is based on the preceding study „Smart&GreenLivingLab“ (FFG project 855516) and focuses consequently on creating social innovations with a broad «social impact». The necessary grounds for this intention are laid by specific elements of a traditional as well as innovative planning for green and open spaces. These elements will be implemented on several locations as so-called “stepping stones” on the basis of an empowerment-based participative planning process with the citizens of St. Pölten.

This aims to create experiences and communication possibilities within cooling urban islands which are spread from north to south through the whole city. By using a bottom-up approach which integrates the citizens of St. Pölten the following elements are implemented: (a.) mobile urban pocket gardening, (b.) concepts for an „eatable city“, (c.) green walls/green chattels, (d.) a climate-research-laboratory for children plus (e.) a collection for free initiatives, which support the idea of a green smart city. Key parts of the project besides the green innovations are the development of a model, the evaluation of the social impacts as well as the process innovation in order to enable the sustainable implementation through the citizens. Via those actual installations spread over the whole city St. Pölten is becoming an extensive testbed.
