Sustainable green maintenance, maintenance, maintenance of vertical
Greenery including legal aspects
The value of the greening of buildings has been increasing because of a continuous decreaseof green spaces in urban areas and concurrent global changes of the climate which causesurban heat islands particularly in cities. Vertical greenings, like ground-bound greenings withclimbing plants or complex facade-bound greenings in exterior spaces are effectivecountermeasures and solution to solve the described issue. Especially vertical greenings havea great potential within the context of densification of urban areas because no land area is consumed.
Apart from beneficial effects on the urban climate facade greenings and vertical greenings in indoor spaces affect the human well-being positively. As a result, the urban population´s quality of the living and working environment increases. Hence, vertical greenings have positive
effects on the environment, microclimate and the quality of life in the cities.
The applicant´s experiences show that the maintenance and care for vertical greenings in the interior and exterior space are often neglected. Particularly, innovative facade greenings (systems) are perceived as technological products. The necessary long-term maintenance and
care for systems which work with the material “plant” are often not considered.
Objectives and innovation: The basis of the project is a wide-ranging survey of the initial state of selected vertical greenings in the exterior and interior space (For more information, see the LOIs). The users of the vertical greenings as well as stakeholders are involved into this process. In the next step a concept is developed which provides information about green care, maintenance, management and control of the systems taking legal building regulations into account.
Expected findings: The findings of the project (know-how about garden maintenance, care, etc.) address the owners and users of the greenings. The “greeningUP!”-knowledge pool provides the know-how which is generated within the project understandable for the target
group. Furthermore, the generated knowledge is processed within the conception of a tool called “first green aid”. The overall objective of the project is to establish a basis to maintain vertical greenings long-term and as a further consequence to enable innovative large-scale vertical greenings in the city of the future.
