Freight, logistics and the gender perspective.

Until a product reaches its destination, a range of actors are involved: This includes freight forwarder, hauliers, terminal and infrastructure operators, transport companies as well as drivers. These sectors interact with each other in various ways. However, in all sectors – which also includes accompanying scientific research – women are underrepresented.

The project EXCHANGES addresses the question in which stages of the logistic value chain people´s features are considered resp. can be considered and in which areas women are affected as users at all. Also, potentials which can be achieved by a higher incorporation of women in these areas and which suitable approaches exist to exploit potentials optimally are explored within the project. Thereby, professional users on the side of service providers, users of freight transport and logistics services on the demand side as well as user along the value chain are considered. Based on this, an analysis is performed which points out gender relevance and its effectiveness in freight transport and logistics. Particularly, roles and responsible positions, which are occupied by women, are examined as well as the question to what extent a gender perspective in research and development is taken into account.

In the next step sector specific companies and organisations, in which women already represent leading positions or researched-related key positions are analysed. Especially, the analysis focuses on to what extent women´s competences contributed resp. can contribute to innovations in business models, research and management. In addition, (structural and organisational) frameworks which affect the involvement of women are examined.

The findings of the project are processed in strategies and guidelines which target to strengthen women´s integration and the consideration of gender relevance in freight transport. Emphasis is placed on application-oriented RTI-projects.
